Background of the Study
Physical inactivity is a major contributor to the rising prevalence of obesity worldwide. In urban centers of Bauchi State, rapid modernization and urbanization have led to a decline in physical activity, as more people adopt sedentary lifestyles due to increased reliance on motorized transportation and sedentary occupations. The reduction in physical activity levels, combined with changes in dietary habits, has created an environment conducive to weight gain and obesity (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).

Urban residents in Bauchi State often face environmental and infrastructural challenges that limit opportunities for physical exercise. The lack of accessible recreational spaces, coupled with safety concerns and heavy traffic, discourages walking and outdoor activities. Moreover, the proliferation of fast food outlets and the convenience of processed foods further contribute to energy imbalance. Numerous studies have established a strong association between physical inactivity and obesity, emphasizing that regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight and preventing chronic diseases (Chukwu, 2024).

This study aims to investigate the impact of physical inactivity on obesity rates in urban centers of Bauchi State. It will assess the prevalence of sedentary behavior among urban residents, evaluate its correlation with obesity, and explore the socio-demographic factors that influence physical activity levels. The research will combine quantitative data from health surveys with qualitative insights from focus group discussions, offering a comprehensive understanding of how physical inactivity contributes to obesity in urban environments. The findings are expected to guide public health interventions and urban planning policies that promote physical activity and reduce obesity prevalence.

Statement of the Problem
In urban centers of Bauchi State, obesity has become a significant public health issue, driven in large part by widespread physical inactivity. Urbanization has led to lifestyle changes that reduce opportunities for physical exercise, resulting in a sedentary population. The lack of adequate recreational infrastructure and safe spaces for physical activity further exacerbates this problem. Consequently, residents experience a higher risk of obesity and related chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes (Lawal, 2023).

Despite recognition of the issue, there is limited localized research on the direct impact of physical inactivity on obesity in Bauchi’s urban areas. Existing public health initiatives have not sufficiently addressed the environmental and behavioral factors contributing to sedentary lifestyles. This gap in knowledge hampers the development of effective interventions that promote physical activity and mitigate obesity risks. Moreover, urban residents may not be fully aware of the health consequences of physical inactivity, further contributing to the problem.

This study seeks to address these gaps by systematically investigating the relationship between physical inactivity and obesity in urban centers of Bauchi State. It aims to quantify the prevalence of sedentary behavior and its correlation with obesity, as well as identify the key barriers to physical activity. The findings will provide critical insights for policymakers and urban planners, enabling the design of targeted interventions that encourage active lifestyles and ultimately reduce obesity prevalence.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of physical inactivity among urban residents in Bauchi State.
  2. To examine the association between physical inactivity and obesity.
  3. To propose strategies to promote physical activity and reduce obesity rates.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of physical inactivity in urban centers of Bauchi State?
  2. How is physical inactivity associated with obesity among urban residents?
  3. What interventions can effectively promote physical activity?

Research Hypotheses

  1. High levels of physical inactivity are significantly associated with increased obesity rates.
  2. Urban environmental factors contribute to sedentary lifestyles.
  3. Implementing urban planning interventions will significantly reduce obesity prevalence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on urban areas in Bauchi State. Data will be collected via surveys, anthropometric measurements, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential self-report biases and the challenge of isolating physical inactivity from other obesity-related factors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Physical Inactivity: Insufficient engagement in moderate to vigorous physical activities.
  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat, typically measured by Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Urban Centers: Densely populated areas within cities.
